A few messages of amazing solidarity from around Salem. I am so happy to see local businesses showing support, especially in these times. <3
The Ugly Mug Diner
“The Ugly Mug Diner will be closed on Wednesday, March 8th in observance of International Women’s Day as part of the Women’s March’s A Day Without A Woman. This International Women’s Strike is a day of action, planned and organized by women in more than 30 different countries.
On this day, women and our allies will act together for equity, justice & the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity.
Even more important than the symbolism of standing with women on March 8, we are asking all employers to perform an audit of their policies impacting women and families. By ensuring that women have pay equity, a livable wage and paid leave, businesses can demonstrate that their long-term actions align with the values we are standing up for on this day.
We are inspired by recent courageous actions like the “Bodega strike” lead by Yemeni immigrant store owners in New York City and the Day Without Immigrants across the U.S. We applaud the efforts of #GrabYourWallet and others to bring public accountability to unethical corporate practices. The Ugly Mug stands in solidarity with the International Women’s Strike organizers, feminists of color and grassroots groups in planning global actions for equity, justice and human rights.
Peace, Love & Waffles

The Naumkeag Ordinary
“Today, Wednesday March 8th, The Naumkeag Ordinary will remain closed.Today is International Women’s day. Women and allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity.Today is a day for reflection & action; observation & questioning.Today we must commit to doing better so that tomorrow dawns brighter, safer, and more free for us, our mothers, sisters, and daughters. https://www.womensmarch.com/womensday”
Jodi Bee Bakes
“Jodi Bee Bakes will be closed on March 8th in observation of “A Day Without A Woman.” On a typical Wednesday, we have five women working hard to make the bakery run. Kara and Savannah handle all the baking while Hillary and Christine serve our customers and keep the front of the house in order. Wednesday’s are the day that I take care of paperwork, payroll, social media, menu planning, scheduling, taxes, etc. We also rely on Doug to wash the dishes and of course George, who does the food shopping. But on March 8th my staff will have the day off with pay because as a woman, as a business owner and as an employer, I stand by them and our collective rights. I encourage other small businesses to make the same sacrifice for the women who help make their businesses possible.
