CALL FOR ACTORS — I AM JOAN SULLIVAN

The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association is looking at life and labor over four centuries at its national historic landmark district museum campus. The program highlights the struggles of Joan Sullivan, a former indentured servant of the Captain John Turner who first built the Turner-Ingersoll mansion, today best known as The House of the Seven Gables.
Open Audition: Please bring along a resume and head shot. Bring a prepared, one minute monologue of a classic text such as Shakespeare that will demonstrate skill with early modern language.
Roles Needed: This is a contract position that will be paid to the actor by The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association.
Colonel Bartholomew Gedney, 41, a Salem merchant, doctor, and local magistrate, Mr. Gedney is a grave and pious man. Years of experience in war and business as well as marriage and fatherhood have grounded him in his faith.
Thomas Maule, 36, a seditious Quaker tailor, unafraid of speaking his mind, even and especially when it gets him trouble with the law.
Priscilla (Kitchen) Hunn, 30, the widow of Captain Nathaniel Hunn of Salem, a casualty of King Phillips’ War. She is fierce in her convictions, a defender of Thomas Maule, and likely a fellow Quaker.
Lucretia Hilman Derby, 38, the wife of Roger Derby, soap maker, who served as a witness for Joan Sullivan, and may have been a Quaker. She appears to have been strong-willed and business-minded.
Joan Sullivan, 17, Thomas Maule’s Irish Catholic indentured maid servant. She previously served in the household of John and Elizabeth (Roberts) Turner, the House of the Seven Gables. This character will be asked to sing a short acapella tune in the audition and performances.

CONCIERGE STAFF – VOLUNTEER
Overview:
To fulfill the Museum’s mission and goals, the Concierge volunteer staff member will assist primarily with greeting visitors and office-related projects, but also may help with other Museum programs and projects. As a key member of the Visitor Services Team, Admissions staff people interact with guest to the museum while staffing the front desk in the Visitor Center under the supervision of the Visitor Services Manager. Concierge staff may assist with processing tickets, communicating with guides, do light paper work and answer guest’s questions regarding the museum, Salem and the surrounding area.
Duties and responsibilities:
Concierge staff members are required to learn about Salem, answer guest questions regarding the historic site, Salem and surrounding area, other attractions in town in a positive and non-opinionated manner;
Greet visitors and assist with Admissions staff; Assist with general office tasks;
Assist with visitor-related projects;
Assist with special events and other programs;
Arrive at work on time and work the entire agreed upon shift;
Admission Staff must work in cooperation with all Guest Service Staff to provide a prompt, courteous experience to all our daily guest.
Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills;
Interest in history, museum, office procedures, or equivalent;
Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English;
Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members;
Demonstration of good customer service skills;
Willingness to learn and follow professional museum practices;
Must be guest focused;
Ability to accept supervision, work both independently and in a group, and be flexible to changing situations;
Have a basic knowledge of historic Salem;
Be presentable, well groomed, and wear name badge with lanyard (given by The Gables).

NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE HOUSE AND HOOPER HATHAWAY DOCENT/VOLUNTEER
Overview:
As a key member of the Visitor Service Team, Nathaniel Hawthorne House/Hooper Hathaway Docent and Exhibit monitors interact with guests while answering questions and monitoring guest behavior in the self-guided areas of the site. Volunteers in these areas ensure that guests are respecting the historic spaces by following established rules
Duties and responsibilities:
Welcome guests entering Nathaniel Hawthorne House or Exhibit space
Inform guests that you are there to assist them as they self-guide through the space by answering questions or helping them find their way
Stay in the space the entire time until relieved by another staff member for breaks or lunch. While stationed in this area, remind guests as needed to please not touch objects on display, not to eat, drink or smoke in the space, and not to take any pictures of any kind.
Arrive at work on time and work the entire scheduled shift
Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
Must be able to take direction and adjust to changing circumstances quickly
Must be guest focused
Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members
Interest in history
Ability to accept supervision, work both independently and in a group, and be flexible to changing situations.

COSTUME REPAIR/SEWING VOLUNTEER
Overview:
The Costume Repair/Sewing Volunteer will sew/repair identified pieces of clothing necessary for our Museum Programming. These costumes assist with the performances done during our fall shows. They are worn in the Turner/Ingersoll Mansion, otherwise known as The House of the Seven Gables, and Hawthorne’s Birthplace. They are worn by our actors and actresses. (Beginning of the summer)
Duties and responsibilities:
Sew pieces of costume
Repair damaged or worn costumes
Iron costumes (if need be)
Clean and launder costumes (if need be)
Use of needle, thread, scissors
Qualifications:
Basic Sewing
Interest in Sewing
Ability to accept supervision, work both independently and in a group, and be flexible to changing situations.

EVENT MARKETING/STAFF VOLUNTEER
Overview:
To fulfill the Museum’s mission and goals, the Event/Marketing volunteer staff member will assist the Special Events Manager and Marketing & Group Sales Coordinator. Some of the duties may include following up on leads/inquiries regarding events, prospecting for group tour companies and maintaining spreadsheets on current clients and future prospects. The volunteer may be asked to help with social media as well as marketing.
Duties and responsibilities:
Research future group tour companies and schools;
Follow up on leads and inquires on past and current clients;
Assist with general office tasks;
Conduct surveys and enter into database;
Help set up for events;
Arrive at work on time and work the entire agreed upon shift;
Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills;
Interest in history, museum, office procedures, or equivalent;
Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English;
Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members;
Demonstration of good customer service skills;
Willingness to learn and follow professional museum practices;
Must be guest focused;
Ability to accept supervision, work both independently and in a group, and be flexible to changing situations;
Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite;
Lift up to 20lbs and stand for long periods of time (occasionally).

GARDEN GUIDE STAFF VOLUNTEER
Overview:
The Garden Guide Volunteer acts as the host/hostess to gardens and grounds. The volunteer will explain the garden, hand out garden literature and answer questions. Be a Goodwill ambassador for the gardens. The Garden Guide Volunteer will also assist guests with any other questions regarding the grounds and historic homes on the site.
Duties and responsibilities:
Discuss different plants/trees and history of Garden
Greet and help orient guests in the Garden
Assist guests around the grounds
Respond to guest inquiries
Answer guest questions regarding the historic site, Salem and surrounding area, other attractions in town in a positive and non-opinionated manner.
Qualifications:
Background in gardening
Knowledge of types of plants and trees
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members
Be guest focused
Have a basic knowledge of historic Salem
Must have the ability to work outside for extended time

MUSEUM STORE STAFF VOLUNTEER
Overview:
The Museum Store Volunteer works to ensure the highest level of museum experience in the Museum Store. The volunteer must provide excellent customer service and greet and engage visitors in conversation for the purpose of sharing information about the museum, store merchandise, programs and exhibits.
Duties and responsibilities:
Welcome guests that enter the Museum Store
Answer guest questions regarding the historic site, Salem and surrounding area, other attractions in town in a positive and non-opinionated manner.
Recommend other attractions based on guest’s expectations
Assigned a duty in the back rooms of the store to help watch for potential shop lifting. If this occurs will notify paid staff
Dust and clean shelves when communicated by Museum Store Manager
Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
Must have the ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and other staff members
Ability to accept supervision, work both independently and in a group, and be flexible to changing situations.
