Salem’s Black Heritage Audio Tour — Sept. 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24, 2017

We have been talking lots of Haunted Happenings events lately, so why not something a little more historical today? Beginning today (9/15) you can download the app below and take a tour around Salem that outlines the city’s black heritage and history. This sounds like a neat way to learn about some of the witch city’s history. “Salem’s Black Heritage is incredibly rich. As slaves or free men and women, as merchants, mariners, abolitionists, and activists, people of color and their advocates have been an integral part of Salem almost since the city’s founding in 1626. Did you know Salem was a hotbed of abolitionist activity? That the Black Picnic dates to 1741, or that the city’s public schools were among the first in the nation to be integrated? Learn more through this audio tour, featuring 25 sites, each with a narration of 1-3 minutes. And don’t miss the complementary Remond Family tour on September 24th.

Special Instructions

Pick and choose the sites of interest to you. Sites are spread across Salem and can be visited in any order. Many merely mark a home or the location where an event occurred. Not all sites have buildings of historical interest. Download app at www.uniguide.me, then select Salem’s Black Heritage.

Tour can begin anywhere. We suggest starting at the Salem Visitor Center at 2 New Liberty Street in downtown Salem where a companion info card is available.
