“What will YOU decide? An original immersive experience happening in October in Salem.
October, 1849
Monsieur Renee Edouard Philipe Levesque, cordially requests your attendance at his home to explore what lies beyond…will you accept?
Join Intramersive Media, producer the Creative Collective and their partner The Peabody Essex Museum for the third installment of Daemonologie. Smoke and Mirrors brings you to the year 1849 in the luxurious home of Monsieur Levesque, a recent addition to Salem society. He is inviting you and the rest of his trusted friends to attend an evening of wonders as he conducts a seance with a blossoming young medium. But not all is as it seems and there are many ways to get lost in a house of smoke and mirrors.
About the show
Show runs about 90 mins + optional talk back and discussion. There is a strict limit of 30 audience members per show.
There is a discount rate available for currently enrolled students, current teachers, senior citizens and military. ID must be presented to claim discounted tickets or you will be expected to pay the difference at the door to gain entry.
Audiences will be able to follow whichever character they choose and change at any time. But fortune favors the loyal, the more you learn from characters the better the story gets. You may be asked to perform tasks for the characters, you will never be forced or coerced but we encourage you to be bold. This show has light to medium contact but consent will always be verbally requested. We ask the same courtesy of our audience in respect to our actors.
This show will involve standing and walking for the better part of the time, however we will provide options for seating in all performance spaces should any guests require a rest. There is one set of stairs in the house but it is not necessary for everyone to go to the second floor to get a full experience of this show. The restroom is indoors and on the main floor of the house.
This show will be performed rain or shine unless the weather proves a danger to the audience, cast and property.
This show takes place in an historic house museum, while we have mostly furnished it with dressings you can sit on and touch there are a few pieces which are museum collection. These items will be marked and we ask you do not touch them.
About the Location
The Cotting Smith Assembly House is located at 138 Federal St. in Salem, MA.
The Cotting-Smith Assembly House, 1782, was built as a Federalist Clubhouse in which balls, concerts, lectures, and other events might be held. George Washington attended a dance here. The original architect is unknown, but the house was later remodeled by Samuel McIntire for use as a private residence. The house is in the Federal style and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. (PEM website)
The Cotting Smith House is part of the Peabody Essex Museum and is located in the historic McIntire District. It is less than a 5 minute walk from the Salem Depot (Newburyport/Rockport Line on the MBTA) and about a 10 minute walk from the center of downtown.
All parking on Federal St is residential permit parking only. While we are working on trying to arrange parking for our guests we are encouraging guests to use public transport or ride sharing.
The Cotting Smith Assembly House is also within walking distance of many wonderful restaurants and shops we encourage you to visit before or after your experience. October in Salem is a very busy and exciting time and we hope you get to enjoy all the wonderful parts of our city.
FAQs
- Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
We will require ID for people who purchase student, teacher and military tickets but there is no age minimum. We would recommend this show for audiences above the age of 17 due to content and intensity. Our shows do deal with themes about racial politics and tensions of the time period, descriptions of treatment of enslaved plantation workers, descriptions of the Great Hunger in Ireland and discussion of mental health treatment practices of the time period. We ask if you are bringing younger audience members use your own discretion.
- What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Public transportation is always the best option for Salem in October, particularly late October. The house is only a 5 minute walk from the Salem Depot through a very photogenic neighborhood. As far as parking goes we are trying to arrange for parking but in the case we cannot make it work all parking on Federal St is resident only. There are lots nearby but they may be charging around $20 to park for the evening. If we do arrange parking we will email all ticket holders to update them.
