Happy Monday everyone. For this week on the blog I wanted to share that…it’s alive! Cinema Salem, that is. After quite a long silence, Cinema Salem is scheduled to reopen on June 4, 2021 under new leadership. Details of the reopening are per the Salem Chamber of Commerce:
“They’ve been dying to make this announcement and now they can: Cinema Salem will show movies again on Friday, June 4. First steps are important, and they decided to mark the new beginning with a film that’s a reminder of what movies on the big screen can do – 2001: A Space Odyssey. CS programmer Jon Kieran made the selection. “You haven’t seen it till you’ve seen it big and loud,” he says. He also notes that it’s one of the most important films in cinema history. Come see it next week and he’ll explain why. If you don’t feel like grappling with the cosmos, but you’d still like to catch a flick, we’ll also offer Jumanji, the original 1995 version with Robin Williams. Here’s Jon again: “The animal effects were 1995-state-of-the-art. Plus there’s Robin Williams in a suit made of banana leaves!” For the time being, Cinema Salem will be open Friday through Monday. You’ll be able to buy tickets soon at www.cinemasalem.com.”

“Cinema Salem is an independent three-screen movie theater in Salem, Mass. Cinema Salem first opened in 2006. Prior to that, a succession of other cinemas occupied the same space. Many North Shore folks recall seeing movies here over the years — from blockbusters to arthouse fare to cheapo dollar-a-ticket shows.
In March 2020 Cinema Salem closed its doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Fourteen months later, the cinema is reopening under new leadership with a new vision.
