things to do in salem, nanowrimo in salem ma

Where are all of my writers at? National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is right around the corner starting November 1st! Last year I wrote a similar post and I wanted to do an updated version for 2019. There are so many ways you can participate in NaNoWriMo around Salem or draw inspiration from Salem and the following are a few of my suggestions to you!

Write in at the House of the Seven Gables

The House of the Seven Gables is holding a write in event with The Witch City Writers. Details are per Facebook and the event is free.

“Join The Witch City Writers whether you are participating in NaNoWriMo or not. We will meet, introduce ourselves, and then write as much as we can in two hours. We hope to inspire you with a pop culture-inspired writing prompt aligning with The House of Seven Gables’ theme for 2019. Expect a couple of word sprints (10-minute speed writing!) and productive time with fellow writers. This event is free. Registration is appreciated.”

Write what you know

If you live or work in Salem and are familiar with the city…write what you know! Are you a regular at Red’s for breakfast on weekends? Include a place similar to it in your story. Do you frequent The Witch House and enjoy its eerie vibes? Write about it! Let the surroundings we all know and love guide you in your story and characters.

Stock up on survival tools around Salem

Are you armed with ground coffee beans from Jaho? Wine from Bunghole Liquors? Mead from Pamplemousse? How about some sweet treats from Caramel Patisserie? Make your rounds in Salem and arm yourself with your survival tools for November!

Do your research ahead of time

Salem is home to Wicked Good Books. Stop in, browse the newest additions to their shelves and get some new ideas cooking. They say good readers make good writers! In addition to Wicked Good Books you could swing by Die With Your Boots on and grab some copies of the latest by FunDead Publications.

Use the scenery to beat writer’s block

If you find yourself hitting writer’s block or a wall, go for a walk around Salem. Take some deep breaths, refresh yourself and come back with new ideas. Maybe bring the camera to stir up some creativity. You could also hop on board the Schooner Fame to clear your mind or change up the scenery by working remotely. Set up shop at Jaho, Front Street Coffee House or even from somewhere like WorkBar. It might be what the doctor ordered.

I hope these ideas helped!! Are you participating in NaNoWriMo this year? Feel free to comment below with your own ideas and enjoy!! <3
