This is a question that pops up at least once a month or so on my social media or in my inbox, so I decided to chat a little bit about it today!! How many days are needed to visit Salem? How long should I stay in Salem? Can you see Salem in one day?
Here we go!
Factor in festivals and special events
Salem has many festivals and events that happen through the year. If you are coming in June, for example, you might want to hit the Salem Arts Festival. This might cause you to sway one way or another versus which days you visit (the festival is over a weekend) and for how long. If you’re coming in October, you may want to see certain attractions in the fall or seasonal happenings. I strongly suggest when deciding how to long to visit, you start here. Plan around the events you want to see when you’re there and allow that to shape your stay.
How long?
In my opinion, ideally you should aim for at least two days/one night if you can. This will allow you the flexibility to move around getting to all of the attractions you want to see as needed. Flexibility can make the biggest difference, especially in October’s crowds. It will also allow you to experience more of the city of course, eat at different restaurants, have more time for walking tours or shopping, etc.
Can you do Salem in one day?
Absolutely. You can set aside a good chunk of a day and see many things Salem has to offer. However, I still suggest throwing in an over night stay if you’re able to so you have time to do more.
Where is the best place to stay in Salem?
Now, this is going to vary wildly depending on personal preferences. However, my vote goes to the Hawthorne Hotel because in my opinion, they are in such a prime location. You are right in the middle of the action.

I absolutely love, love, love your site. It is so informative, helpful and fun. My daughter and I visit Salem once a year (it’s our “thing”), we always stay at the Hawthorne, and it is by far our favorite spot. Your website always gives me good info. We can’t wait for our trip in November and I can’t wait to visit your site for info before that trip. Thank you for taking the time to share great information ❤️
