things to do in salem, proctor's ledge memorial salem ma

I have done one photo tour style post before here on my blog and decided to do another one for you guys today. Over in my Facebook group there was a comment regarding the memorial at Proctor’s Ledge in Salem and that gave me the idea to create this content for you. I went over there last weekend and snapped some pictures so everyone can see it.

Proctor’s Ledge is now believed to be the site where 19 innocent people were hanged in 1692, accused of witchcraft. You can find this memorial at 7 Pope St. Salem, MA 01970 near the Walgreens.

  1. Out of curiosity, are those scrape marks on the stones? If you look at Picture number 2 above you will see what appears as scrapings of the memorial stones. Of course, to me, I feel it is disrespectful for those who the memorial is for. Is it just me or do you feel it is okay for this to happen or was this done by family descendants?

    1. I don’t think those are scrapings from a visitor, I think that is likely a product of when the memorial was built. When they created the stones.

  2. Beautiful and tragic at the same time.
    Thank you for sharing.

    1. You’re welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed my images despite it being a sad topic.

  3. Thank you so much for this photo tour. I was in Salem last year and did not visit this site because I felt it would be too sad and bring me down. We had a lovely trip and enjoyed Salem very much. We are returning next year for the 400 Year Anniversary of the Mayflower in Plymouth. I will definitely visit Proctor’s Ledge then. It is a lovely memorial for a very terrible and tragic event in our country’s history. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed my photo tour. I hope you have fun next year in MA, Proctor’s Ledge is for sure worth the little excursion off the beaten path. 🙂
