Booking an Airbnb in Salem, MA can definitely be a cheaper alternative to a hotel. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind and I wanted to chat about that today here on the blog. The following are some basics for you to consider when making your decisions.

Parking

First is a big one…parking. Much like choosing a regular hotel in Salem, you need to factor in where you can park the car. If you’re driving into Salem, I’d specifically find the details on the Airbnb listing about this. Some hosts offer a visitor parking pass that allows you to park on the street in residential zones. Others may not and may direct you to find parking on your own. Be sure about these details before booking because having a car in Salem, especially around the fall, can be an obstacle.

Location is everything

Salem is largely a very walkable city, however you should still try to gather some location information. Direct message your host and ask for landmarks near the location or see if they give any in the listing. Pin point that area on a map and decide if it’s in a good location depending on which of Salem’s attractions you’re looking to visit.

Mobility & old homes

Many of Salem’s homes have been around for a very long time. Some of these old homes now host Airbnb locations. That means you may encounter slanted floors, steps, walk ways which are raised and more. If you are worried about mobility and have specific needs in order to be able to get around, I’d direct message your host and ask. The Airbnb I was in the other night had slanted floors, an uneven walkway and a tall step up into the bathroom. You never know with the old homes around here.

Pet & 420 friendly

Salem is a very pet friendly city so people often bring their animals along for visits. If you have sensitivies to pet hair, I’d check with the Airbnb you are considering to see what their policies are. The same goes for marijuana…weed is legal in Massachusetts so some Airbnb locations DO expressly state that they allow guests to smoke on or around the property. If this is a sensitivity of yours, again, check with the host or book elsewhere.

Use common sense

Of course, use common sense. Read the reviews of the Airbnb you are considering, book as in advance as possible, be a courteous guest, communicate and leave the property as you found it. Always message the host right through Airbnb’s website or app and never handle money or exchanges outside of the app.

I hope this helps you plan your trip. Enjoy!! <3

  1. Thank you for this blog! I stayed in an Air BnB Halloween of ’19. Was only a 5 min uber from the Commons and only ran us $600 for a 4n-5d stay. My sister and I used Uber which was very inexpensive and had our drivers pick up and drop us off at the Salem Commons. I appreciate this blog so much as I used it a lot while planning my trip and I keep up with it to plan my trips to salem this year.

    1. That is great that you found such a good location so close to the Common. 🙂 I am glad you enjoy my blog and what I do here! Salem is such a special place and I love helping people experience all that it has to offer.
